Chaossworn: Chalice of black flames

It is quite frequently that we are sent shit demos and promos and other homosexual works of quite decidedly shit bands here at Global Domination. Luckily for me they never reach my doorstep, rather Lord K’s, but sometimes some gems come along that I just happen to wish they fell upon my mailbox instead. I’m sure if I really wanted to, though, I could just pester staffer CadenZ to send me a copy of this by good old snail mail. Yes, we have musicians on our staff that are not named Lord K.
What is Chaossworn (or as I have already misspelled it here, Chaosworm), you may ask? I will say nothing more than blackened death metal. That is a quite apt description as these guys forego a lot of the shit tendencies that seems to follow black metal, and at times they just sound more mid-paced death metal. A lot like Dissection, really. Sometimes so much so that you most certainly will have no trouble whatsoever figuring out what bands inspired these guys. That means this is some more guitar-centric music, focusing on melodies — forgive me for misuse of a term if that’s the case — and dissonance. Vocals by Herr Johansson are quite fitting and I like them the more I listen to this. Not an instantly recognizable voice like Mr. Nödtveidt or Åkerfeldt, but I can only imagine he’ll be sounding even better on later recordings.
It’s guitar-driven, so how do those guitars sound? Pretty good. I’d be a complete ass if I didn’t complement Mr. Posti on his leads and whatnot. I don’t know who composes what, though, as far as the songs go. Production is good enough. Better than shitloads of other demos as you can hear everything (maybe not so much the bass) well, like the good drumming. I’m not even going to say there’s room for improvement because it’s only a demo. Nothing negative about the sound, though.
It’s a short listen at 15 minutes nearly exactly, and I enjoyed every millisecond. I’m partial at the moment to “Crowned & winged”, but you’d be good to check out either of the songs. Hit their MySpace for a listen. Love it, and pester these guys to get a full-length out the door already.
